Skilled Workers Machinist (NOC Code 7231)

Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions. Machining and tooling inspectors inspect machined parts and tooling in order to maintain quality control standards. They are employed by machinery, equipment, motor vehicle, automotive parts, aircraft and other metal products manufacturing companies and by machine shops.

Requirements

Completed at least 9360 hours (72 months) of hand on work experiences

Acquired Skills

  • Interpret specifications, charts, drawings or sample parts to determine the machining operation to be performed
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances, and lay out working sketches as needed
  • Set up and operate precision metal cutting
  • Grinding machines such as lathes, milling machines, drills and grinders
  • Make and repair products made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles, fiberglass and space age alloys.
  • Operate tools which may include computer numerically controlled to perform precision machining operations
  • Capable of fitting parts to mechanisms and verify dimensions
